There are no points, no badges, no leaderboards, no streak a student is afraid to break, and no notifications engineered to pull them back in.
The argument for these mechanics is that they drive engagement, and they do. They also teach a young player to practise for the reward — and a student practising for a badge stops on the day the badge stops mattering.
The intent here is the older one: that getting better is the thing that feels good, because that is the only motivation that survives a career.
