The app’s overtone note tells you to get the throat’s shape ready before you play — “late, and the note comes out a garbled mess.” That line is the vivid version, and a little hyperbolic on purpose. Here is the full story it stands in for: why the high notes run sharp, why the low notes sag flat, why some notes barely speak at all — and why the throat is the collaborator that fixes all of it.
Imagine a very high note. To speak properly, it needs the throat in a very narrow position — and you can feel what that means if you sing: notice what the back of the tongue and the throat do as you slide up. It is a precise and delicate symphony of muscle alignment. If that alignment is missing — too narrow, not narrow enough, or simply not part of your preparation at all — the note will not speak easily. If it does speak, it will probably sound thin or distorted, and in all likelihood it will be out of tune — and it will likely be high. The exact opposite happens at the bottom of the horn: the low notes want a big, open, relaxed space, and when they do not get it they go dull and flat, or refuse to come out at all.
Students fight these notes for years believing the fingers or the reed are to blame. Very often it is the throat, overshooting or undershooting a position it was never taught to find.
My teacher in Paris was Alain Bouhey, at the École Normale de Musique de Paris — my teacher, on and off, from 1986 through 1993. He would often say: use the low F as your reference. As you go high, try to keep the harmonic wealth, the depth and the warmth of the low notes. As you go low, try to keep the clarity of the high ones. What he was really teaching was a homogeneous approach — one texture of sound across the entire instrument.
That is difficult to achieve, and it is worth being honest about why: the push and pull of the saxophone itself. The resistance changes across the range — sometimes extremely, sometimes from one note to its immediate neighbor — and each note has idiosyncrasies of its own.

Practice it, and it will do wonders for exactly what this commentary is about: throat position, a more even sound, a more in-tune sound, and a beautiful, warm, controlled vibrato.
Middle C♯ — the one just before you press the octave key — is the open note: nothing closed, the shortest tube on the horn. And it resists. It comes out stuffy, and it sits low — so much so that saxophonists invented alternate fingerings to deal with it, adding the octave key and the G key to bring it up and give it a spine. There are schools of saxophone playing where that fingering is taught from the very beginning. (The modern Selmer instruments, to their credit, have dealt with much of this in the design of the horn itself.)
One half-step up lives the opposite world. For the D, you close all six main keys and press the octave key — and the note pops. You could argue it should resist even more; it does not, because now the whole horn is resonating. When the pads seal properly — a hermetic seal — you can hear the saxophone itself begin to pump and vibrate under the note. And that D tends to run a little sharp.
From C♯ to D is one half-step and two completely different playing experiences. That, in miniature, is the whole instrument.
The throat’s position ends up being a very important collaborator in this story. It has to be correct first. And where the horn itself has problems, necessity is the mother of invention: a trained throat corrects those notes with a preset position that happens in a millisecond — at lightning speed, note after note, as you move around the horn.
This is one more reason playing scales in all twelve keys, across the whole range, is non-negotiable. Your body, your mind, your ears and your heart work together until, over time, all the stars line up. Overtone exercises jump-start that entire process. They teach the throat to position itself with great accuracy before you play. It is my contention that this is the whole game, players. This is where the glory is.
Once you can play above the normal range of the instrument, try the following. Play an altissimo A. Now keep your throat exactly where it is — and change the fingering. Then change it again. The A stays, sounding almost identical across whatever fingering you choose.
That tells you two things. First: the throat is not merely important up there — it is, in many cases, the determining factor. Second, and remarkably: the highest notes are being produced more in the body than in the saxophone. That is not just a player’s impression. Acoustics researchers at the University of New South Wales measured players with pressure probes inside the mouth and published the result in Science (Chen, Smith & Wolfe, 2008): above the instrument’s normal range, it is the resonance of the player’s vocal tract — not the tube of the instrument — that selects which note sounds.

The higher the note, the more of it is made inside the throat and oral cavity — which is exactly where an unprepared shape pushes it sharp, and where a collapsed one lets the bottom sag.
They sit either side of a break in the instrument's response. The C♯ asks for a throat shape that is already set before the note begins; the D is forgiving of a late one. Practising them as a pair is what exposes the difference.
