For band directors›It starts at three notes
The Whole Horn · what it means
Range is a slider. A student in their first week who can play three notes practises three notes, and the written scale grows one note at a time as their embouchure allows.
Most practice material is written for a competence the student does not yet have, and the gap between the page and the player is where beginners decide music is not for them.
Making range continuous rather than fixed removes that gap entirely: there is always a version of the exercise that is exactly hard enough.

Three notes is a real assignment. So is the full range of the horn. It is the same exercise.
