It starts at three notes

Range is a slider. A student in their first week who can play three notes practises three notes, and the written scale grows one note at a time as their embouchure allows.

What it means in practice

• Assignable in week oneYou do not have to wait until a class can manage an octave. The material meets them where they actually are.
• It grows with themAdd a note when the player is ready, not when the method book says so.
• No forced octaveA beginner is never handed a range their embouchure cannot support, which is where discouragement usually begins.
• The same engine at every levelA doctoral candidate warming up across the full range uses the identical tool. Only the slider moves.
• Which makes it two products at onceA tool for the outlier who wants more, and a tool you can assign to an entire first-year class.

Why it matters

Most practice material is written for a competence the student does not yet have, and the gap between the page and the player is where beginners decide music is not for them.

Making range continuous rather than fixed removes that gap entirely: there is always a version of the exercise that is exactly hard enough.
