Once the app is on the phone, the trainer works offline. The only things the app fetches are the spoken narration from thewholehorn.com and the retailer photos on its gear page, so those two need a connection.

What it means in practice

• The basement rehearsal roomWhere school Wi-Fi does not reach and a phone shows one bar, the trainer behaves exactly as it does anywhere else.
• The bus, the car, the practice roomAnywhere a student has twenty minutes, they have every exercise.
• Nothing waiting to loadNo spinner between a student deciding to practise and practising.
• It is a consequence, not a featureThe exercises are built into the app, so practising has nothing to connect to.

Why it matters

A practice tool that needs a connection fails in exactly the places practice happens: the back of a band room, a bedroom with bad reception, a bus on the way to a festival.

Running locally is what makes it dependable, and it is the same architectural decision that means nothing about a student is transmitted anywhere.
